Always baby steps. Today I have decided to start "doing" some of the activities that I have explored academically but haven't taken the time to put into practice. As simple as it looks (a bit of flashy writing) I needed to discover whether it could be a self taught skill or whether most people would need to follow an example. Young people learn these skills much more quickly than us old folks :) At the same time, they almost never consider the technology behind making these things happen. I would like to say that I have this one in the bag! The proof will be in the pudding...when I can make all the bits of text that I want to look like this then I will be happy to put a tick next to this small but impressive skill. As a side note... I actually started out this session trying to discover how I could design a simple business/calling card that I could hand out to people rather than expecting people to have to rummage around in their bags for a scrap piece of paper to scribb

My daughters teacher came to me a little cautiously today to report that Miss T had been quite upset in class today. She had become so upset that she was sobbing and needed a hug. The teacher went on to explain that she felt that she was partly responsible for the distress and sadness because it had started with her playing music for the students to write to, an activity that the children really enjoyed and through which produced some great work. However for my daughter it triggered some grief that until now she must have been bottling up. We lost our beautiful German Shepherd- Jack- at Christmas time due to an untreatable illness. The decision to end his suffering happened swiftly and without the benefit of time to adjust to the idea that we would lose our beautiful friend so soon (he was only 6years old). SMALL STEPS

It started accidentally, I came across a short Youtube clip about PLEs created by a Year 7 student that I thought would appeal to my current student audience. I showed the clip to the students to promote some discussion one morning. Just a short 15min segment right at the beginning of the day. Wow talk about lighting a fuse!!! The clip generated discussion not only on that day, but on the next day that I was able to see them. I went looking for more short videos that would appeal to the students AND contain some small learning element that would spark discussion. I am really keen to keep this format of starting the day going.....the problem. How to collect enough quality, relevant, thought provoking video clips/slideshows or visuals that fit the purpose. If you have a wonderful source or resources that are short, sharp and focused on general learning outcomes targeting ages 11-15 send the ideas my way. In exchange I will endeavour to post all my findings here for others to access too.
